Raw Food Diet isn’t really a DIET

Raw Food Diet isn’t really a DIET

Our busy lives can sometimes make it difficult to stick to our dieting plans when we’re trying to lose weight. We’re either keeping track of our fat intake, our sugar intake, our carbohydrate intake, or our caloric intake. With all that counting, it’s no wonder most of us become discouraged and ‘fall off the dieting wagon.’ Add to that the surplus of convenient diet foods that are out there that are chock-full of preservatives and additives that we choose when we’re tired from a busy day and don’t have the energy or time to prepare a nutritious meal, and we’re headed down a wrong-way street trying to navigate our way through our weight-loss journey.

Enter the raw foods lifestyle. Not only are raw foods full of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals our bodies need to perform optimally, they provide enzymes for proper digestion, and will also result in the purging of toxins and the cleansing of your body systems. The best part? You can eat as many fruits and vegetables as you like….and you will lose weight.

In addition, the natural high fiber content of most raw foods will help you feel fuller, thereby reducing your food intake. They’ll assist in turning up the thermostat in your body, helping to melt away that excess weight and nourishing your body’s cells to continue with the fat-burning process. Most raw foods are naturally low in calories, and obviously much lower in calories, fats, sugars, and carbohydrates than the dieting convenience foods we’d been reaching for in the past. The added bonus of increased energy, regulated blood sugar and blood pressure levels, sharper vision and improved mental functionality, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t become a ‘raw foodie’ earlier in the weight loss and dieting game. And, once you reach your weight loss goals, you’ll realize how healthy you’ve become in the process, and the raw food lifestyle will then be your way of life.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The Shot in the Arm You May Need for Diet Therapy

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The Shot in the Arm You May Need for Diet Therapy

What exactly is vitamin B12 and why do we need it? Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that is found in our food and we need it to keep our nerve cells healthy and to keep our red blood cells at optimum efficiency. It is also extremely important for proper digestion; in fact, our stomach acids grab the B12 from food and mix it with IF, which is then easily absorbed by the intestinal tract.

If you have a vitamin B12 deficiency, you are likely to feel tired, lightheaded, and weak. You may have a sore tongue or your gums may bleed. You will probably experience digestion problems – either diarrhea or constipation. You may feel tingling in your hands or feet, get out of breath easily, hear a ringing sound in your ears, have chest pain, and develop neurological symptoms such as forgetfulness, a lack of ability to focus, and becoming easily confused.

Most people do not suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency, as it is readily available in a lot of different foods, but mostly meat, so sometimes vegetarians and vegans do not get enough B12 from their diets. If you do have a vitamin B12 deficiency, it is probably most likely due to some disorder of the digestive system. People with chronic diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, and the like are likely to have B12 anemia because of their inability to absorb the B12 they ingest.

Vitamin B12 is a known energy booster, and as such many dieticians and physicians are recommending weight loss patients, whether or not they have a vitamin B12 deficiency, include a shot in their diet therapy. The reason for this is most people who diet; tend to complain about losing energy, perhaps because of their limited calorie intake. Since B12 is a big energy provider, many health care professionals and lay people alike swear that dieters should follow a regimen for vitamin B12 deficiency diet therapy. Most weight loss clinics include B12 injections as part of their overall healthy weight loss plans.

Neurologists, gastroenterologists, and family physicians also see the benefits of vitamin B12 deficiency diet therapy. As people get older, they may eat a lesser variety of foods, and combined with the decrease in cognitive functioning people tend to display in their older years, vitamin B12 diet therapy is often seen as necessary. Even most doctors who treat patients with Alzheimer’s recommend B12 as a general blood cell booster to help with cognitive abilities. Because a vitamin B12 deficiency can often result in an inability to focus and concentrate, students may also benefit from being tested for B12 levels.

Vitamin B12 deficiency diet therapy has also been shown to reduce cravings. If you can eliminate or greatly reduce your desire for those foods that you know are not good for you, you are well on your way to overcoming food and weight loss difficulties. Vitamin B12 is a great energy source and a valuable craving reduction tool.

Holiday Diet And Weight Loss Tips

Holiday Diet And Weight Loss Tips

The approaching holidays are a nightmare for anyone engaged in a weight loss or diet regimen and with very good reason. With all of the temptations that seem to lurk around every corner, office get-together and holiday party; it can be easy for even the most determined dieters to get sidetracked and lose sight of their weight loss goals. This year; however, by giving your choices and portions a little carefully aimed attention you can avoid destroying all the hard work you have put into your diet the rest of the year.

One of the biggest challenges for many dieters during the holiday season is avoiding the hectic round of get-togethers and parties that almost always come hand in hand with the holidays. The good news about such events; however, is that many of them tend to be buffet and pot-luck types of affairs; which gives you numerous options that can help you to stick to your diet plans. While buffet tables are typically laden with heavy casseroles and fatty appetizers, you can usually find at least one platter of fresh vegetables served with a nice low-fat dip. Also, opt for fresh fruits instead of the abundance of baked desserts that are typically offered. Instead of stocking your plate up with diet dangerous foods, choose steamed vegetables and healthy grains such as wild rice and wheat bread. Opting for white meat instead of dark meat can also help you to stay on the straight and narrow, by avoiding additional calories.

Whenever possible, limit the amount of alcohol based beverages that you consume. Just a few alcoholic beverages contain a surprising amount of calories; not to mention the fact that they only serve to increase the appetite of most people. Choose a light bear, wine spritzer or carbonated flavored water instead.

When it’s your turn to prepare the mound of requisite holiday food, remember that there are several tricks you can employ in order to stay true to your diet goals and keep family and friends pleased at the same time. One way to do this is by substituting evaporated skim milk for regular milk or cream in your holiday recipes. This will help to tremendously cut down on the amount of fat and calories included in your dishes without sacrificing taste. Unsweetened applesauce makes a great substitute for calorie laden oil while egg substitute can easily replace the requirement for eggs in most recipes without any noticeable change to the taste.

Finally, one of the best ways that you can avoid overindulging this holiday season is to take it slow and easy. Remember that the entire point of this time of year is to get together with friends and family members; many of which you might not see for months to come. Focus on the fun and conversation instead of rushing through a heavy meal and you’ll find that not only did you enjoy this year more, but that you made it through with your diet intact.

Healthy Eating Tips For Maximizing Your Nutritional Intake

Healthy Eating Tips For Maximizing Your Nutritional Intake

Nutrition is often misunderstood as quite a simple and easy thing. However, without the right knowledge about nutrition, you could be missing essential parts to your diet. This article will provide you with the crucial parts included in a healthy nutrition plan. You don’t miss important events, why miss essential elements of our diet?

If you are dealing with a picky eater, try to give them smaller portions at each meal. By doing this, they won’t feel overwhelmed with the amount of food in front of them and if they are hungry, they will be more inclined to eat their entire meal since it is not a huge serving size.

When you are on the quest to achieve a proper weight by maintaining a proper diet, then it is very important that you understand the importance of keeping your meals relatively small. Studies have shown that small meals help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight in an efficient manner.

A great nutrition tip for every single person is to make sure that you eat breakfast every morning. The saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day could not be any more true. Eating right when you wake up jump starts your metabolism so that you are able to burn more calories throughout your day.

Children need to have proper daily nutrition to stay strong and healthy. However, some children are very picky eaters, which can cause parents to become frustrated over their child’s lack of appetite. Never force a meal on a child. This may lead to a power struggle over food. Instead, serve small portions of food to avoid overwhelming your child. Smaller portions may help to increase your child’s appetite.

Many people switch to soy milk for the health benefits or to eat a vegetarian diet. It is important to remember, however, that unlike dairy milk, soy milk is not a natural source of calcium. Manufacturers add calcium, but it settles to the bottom of the carton over time, so unless you shake the carton before each serving, you are missing this vital nutrient.

Many people enjoy having cereal for breakfast. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it tastes good too. Cereal is okay to have as long as you choose one that is healthy. Look for one that has at least 7 grams of fiber per serving, and is low in sugar and sodium.

Do not get yourself on the diet roller-coaster. There are so many different diet plans out there that many people will try for a few weeks and then go back to their unhealthy eating patterns. If you just skip the diet plan and start eating healthy foods, you will have much better success in controlling your weight.

The process of being a healthy person begins with having proper nutrition. Although, like stated in the beginning of this article, pieces of a healthy diet are often over looked. Now that you have read this article and obtained valuable information about proper nutrition, it is time to make sure you are being healthy.

Planning for Atkins

Planning for Atkins

When it comes to the Atkins diet, your success will lie in your planning. Making sure you have the proper foods on hand when you begin your diet will go a long way toward your ongoing weight loss. There are many suggestions for Atkins diet meals in the Atkins books, and there are plenty of resources online for Atkins and low-carb recipes.

Planning your meals and snacks will be an important part of your life when you are on this diet. That advice really goes for any diet. When you eat whatever you like, you gain weight. Your current weight and health problems are a direct result of letting your eating habits go unchecked for so long.

As with all diet plans, becoming used to the Atkins way of eating is going to take some time and adjustment. The standard American diet relies heavily on carbohydrates and other restricted foods. Many people grew up on carbohydrate heavy favorites like spaghetti and meatballs, meat and potatoes and pasta casserole. It is going to take some effort and patience to get used to eating in an entirely new way.

There are two different approaches you can take in adjusting your diet. You can find replacements for your favorite foods with “mock” carbohydrates. For example, lasagna made with eggplant or zucchini instead of pasta is much more carb-friendly than the regular variety. Spaghetti squash noodles make a good substitute for spaghetti noodles. There are also many low-carb or carb-free replacements for bread, pasta and sugar products.

The second approach is to find out how to make new recipes that center around meats and other low-carb foods. There are a wide variety of meats that are acceptable on the Atkins plan. If you are used to just eating ground beef or chicken on a weekly basis, you’ll be surprised by the variety of meats that are out there. Try incorporating pork, lamb and ham into your weekly routine. You can also experiment with game fowl like Cornish hen, quail and pheasant. If you’ve never been a fan of fish, try a different variety. Some people who don’t like trout find they have a love of salmon or another fish. Don’t forget shellfish like mussels, clams and shrimp. These foods are all acceptable and can add variety to your diet.

Make sure to have some easy to prepare foods on hand for snacks and quick meals. For example, thin sliced cucumbers, radishes and celery mixed with lemon mayonnaise makes a great low-carb meal or dinner salad. Fried peppers, mushrooms and garlic served on arugula with feta cheese is another good option.

Research and try out different low-carb recipes so you have a good base of knowledge of what to prepare for meals. The most important step you can take in losing weight is planning. Getting a good arsenal of easy to prepare meals will prevent you from hitting the drive through or going to a restaurant and breaking your diet.

If you have delicious food to look forward to everyday, you’ll be less bored with your diet. Even during the restrictive induction phase, there are many food combinations that you can use. At first glance, the vegetable and meat options may seem restrictive. But this is only in comparison to what you have been used to eating. With a little planning and creativity, you can find something interesting to eat everyday.

The Low-Down On Diet Comparison

The Low-Down On Diet Comparison

Low carbs and high protein is the way to lose weight, or so you’ll hear from one diet guru, and he has the testimonials to back it up. Low fat, lots of carbs and fresh fruits and veggies, says another – and he’s got the back up from satisfied users, too. A third swears that you need to count the amount of sugar; another tells you the enemy is white flour – if you want to lose real weight and keep it off, who do you listen to?

Take a look at the brief summaries below for a quick overview of the pros and cons of each of the popular types of diet plans.

Low Carb-Hi Protein Diets

Diets like the Atkins, the South Beach and the Zone Diet all recommend restricted carbohydrates and allow liberal amounts of protein, including protein derived from animal sources. Generally, they limit the overall amount of carbohydrates, or teach you to differentiate between “good” and “bad” carbohydrates. Bad carbohydrates, which are forbidden, include white flour, white bread, and white sugar.

Pros: The diets all encourage learning healthy eating as part of losing weight. Deriving most of your daily calories from high fiber sources of carbs like leafy green vegetables and grains is generally considered the best diet for nutrition by the established medical community. The popularity of the diets makes it easy to find low-carb foods.

Cons: The allowance of eating all the protein and fats you like flies in the face of conventional medical wisdom. A diet high in saturated fats could lead to heart disease, diabetes, gout and other chronic health conditions. Following the diets’ cautions and advice to keep portions reasonable should mitigate that concern, though.

Weight Loss “Programs”

Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, Weight Watchers, SlimFast and a number of other weight loss programs rely heavily on pre-packaged ‘diet’ foods. They incorporate professional coaching, social structure and reinforcement.

Pros: The professional coaching and nutritional benefits are a big plus, as are the reinforcement and support aspect of the diets. Meals and supplements are prepackaged in the right proportions, and if you stick to the diets and exercise as directed you will lose weight.

Cons: The weekly fees and cost of meals can be expensive. In addition, if you rely completely on the packaged foods, you miss out on the re-education of your eating habits, which is important to maintaining any weight lost.

The Real Mayo Clinic Diet

This is not the diet that has circulated for the past thirty or more years and purported to have originated at the Mayo Clinic! The true Mayo Clinic’s nutrition and diet center recommends a healthy eating weight loss plan based on limiting fats, proteins and carbohydrates, counting calories and deriving most of the daily nutrition from vegetables, grains and fruit.

Pros: There’s no ‘diet’. Instead, you’re encouraged to take control of your eating. Portion control and sensible balance of nutrients are the cornerstones of a weight loss plan that takes weight off gradually, and helps you keep it off permanently.

Cons: It may be difficult to stay on the diet. Counting calories and portions can be difficult if you’re eating out or on the run.

There are many diets that promise to take weight off quickly and painlessly, without exercise or changing your eating habits. The three major variations of diets above all will result in 1-2 pounds of loss per week, which most doctors believe is the optimum way to lose weight for long lasting results.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss

The ability to lose weight naturally is a very desirable condition. Adopting an apple cider vinegar diet into your regimen is the ideal approach for weight loss that does not involve stimulants or diet pills. The plan is pretty straightforward and the results are absolutely stunning.

No one likes to carry extra pounds but few of us have the means to naturally rev up the metabolic rate while keeping cravings under control. There are some simple steps that dieters can take to ensure that they can drop weight naturally and with relatively little effort.

While the apple cider vinegar diet is not miracle cure, it is a viable resource for weight loss without suffering. The secret to the diet’s success is thought to lie in the combination of the vinegar’s acidic nature and the natural pectin found in apples. The combination serves as a means of getting the metabolism fueled and ready to burn.

One of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar is the product’s ability to lower cholesterol. Pectin is a key factor in reducing cholesterol in the body. While there is no scientific connection between the lowered cholesterol and weight loss, there does seem to be a correlation when it comes to this nectar.

The apple cider weight loss plan is simple to follow. There are no restricted menus and nothing is really off limits. However, dieters do have to practice restraint when it comes to snack foods and their meals have to be in sensible proportions. Of course, water is on the top of the list of priorities.

Dieters just take between one and three teaspoons of the vinegar before each meal. This gives the supplement time to rev the metabolism while curbing the appetite. Beginners should start with just one teaspoon before each meal and gradually work their way to three teaspoons.

Add a little light exercise into your daily routine and you have the makings of a simple weight loss plan that actually seems too good to be true. Following the plan is quite easy. All that is necessary is the capacity to remember to take the vinegar before each meal. If the nectar is too much for your stomach, you may want to opt for apple cider vinegar pills instead.

Weight loss is an ongoing process for many people who opt for fad diets and trendy weight reduction plans. The apple cider vinegar diet is ideal because it offers a natural weight loss remedy without a restrictive eating regimen.

In a placebo controlled study undertaken on 6800 patients with acomplia (with diet and physical exercise included), the average reduction in weight was as much as 6.5 kgs, as compared to 1.6 kgs through a placebo; i.e. approximately four times as much as placebo.

Rimonabant is still awaiting clearance by FDA in the US. Sanofi plans to launch Rimonabant under the new name ‘Zimulti’ here. Until such time that the Americans hear about FDA approval, they will have to continue with the fate. And if they are die-hard fans of this drug then they will not mind visiting a doctor in the UK and purchasing acomplia from a local pharmacy here. One crucial aspect of dieting is to burn fat but also feed muscle as you don’t want to lose weight and have a lot of flabby skin.

Here are some important tips on dieting:

1. Do not ever skip breakfast, your breakfast gets your metabolism going, especially after a good nights sleep. Eat a healthy diet, like whole grain cereals, protein based foods that are low in fat, lowfat yogurt, etc.
2. Drink plenty of water, for one drinking a lot of water keeps you feeling full and less hungry, drink less soda and coffee and definitely less alcohol as all of those can add significant calories to your daily intake.
3. Make sure you watch your carbohydrate and calorie intake. Make sure you keep track of your intake. Carbohydrates need to be kept low, as well as eating good carbs such as fruits and vegetables, stay away from your refined sugars, flours and processed foods.
4. Take your time, don’t try to rush losing weight, lose weight healthy means lose weight slow, plus if you do it the right way, you will keep the weight off. Many people who lose weight to rapidly, as soon as they shift their eating habits back they put the weight back on quickly and usually a lot more weight than they originally lost. What happens when you lose weight to rapidly your metabolism will slow down, it slows down the rate we burn energy to survive. A resistance is built up which is called homeostasis, for example when our body heats up, we sweat, which is the response designed to cool down, this is homeostasis. The same principle happens when you lose weight, but when you lose weight to rapidly you will lose body fluid and muscle mass instead of burning the fat.

You should also take a regimin of vitamins and minerals. This will boost your energy and your metabolism.

To lose weight healthy, you must eat good foods, not just basing them on the caloric or carbohydrate content, and you must do some sort of exercise.

If you follow most of these weight loss tips, you can lose weight, lose weight healthy as well as keep the fat off.

Holiday Table Strategies

Holiday Table Strategies

It’s that time of year again and for most of us that will mean rounds of parties, get-togethers and holiday dinners. While the holidays are a great time to get-together with family and friends, they can be a real threat to our diets. This year instead of giving up holiday get-togethers all together or giving in to the decadent fare spread out before you and regretting it later learn how to successfully manage the holidays with some creative table strategies.

When planning strategies to keep your diet intact throughout the holidays, there are two main fronts you need to wage on the Battle of the Bulge. First, you need to work on diet strategies for events that you host and second, strategies for events that you do not host.

Hosting holiday events can be a lot of work, but it does give you a tremendous advantage in terms of managing your diet. Many people are reluctant to even attempt incorporating their diet plans into the foods they offer at holiday get-togethers because they are concerned they will offend their family and friends.

First, not everything that you offer on your holiday buffet table needs to be diet related. Just make sure you have enough of the items that fit into your plan so that you have plenty to choose from without straying into forbidden territory. Also, consider ways that you can make traditional foods diet friendly. In many cases, your guests and family will never even know the difference; unless you tell them. Cocktail parties are always a big hit and it’s easy to incorporate diet friendly foods into such a party with low calorie dipping sauces, lean meat skewers, fresh vegetables and fruits.

You will have less control over events that you are not hosting; but that doesn’t mean that you have no options. One of the best ways to defend yourself against the onslaught on tempting foods at most holiday parties is to eat a sensible small meal before you attend the party. This will take a significant edge off your appetite and you will be less likely to cheat when you arrive.

Another strategy that can work well is to bring a dish that fits in with your diet plan. Don’t make a big deal out of it or force it on anyone else and you’ll likely find that no one is really paying much attention to the fact that you brought your own food. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water; which can be a great tool to help you fill full.

Finally, don’t forget to incorporate the help of a weight loss buddy to get you through any moments of temptations. Chances are, there will be at least one other person in attendance who is also trying to stick to their guns in terms of diet resolutions. Support one another by staying away from the food table and taking a brisk walk after the event to work off anything you just couldn’t resist sampling.

Search Engine Marketing – The Full Package

Search Engine Marketing – The Full Package

After conducting extensive research I have come to the conclusion that there is a great deal of misunderstanding surrounding the subject of Search Engine Marketing. The greatest misunderstanding is in confusing the terms Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

One would think that those individuals claiming to be SEO experts should be knowledgeable about the subject and recognize the clear distinction. Apparently this is not the case; the internet is full of misguided information, from so called experts. Proving, I suppose that the industry is liberally spattered with cowboys.

To start, let us first define the term “Search Engine Optimisation” (henceforth referred to as SEO).

SEO

SEO is the process of manipulating the structure and content of a website in such a way that it will perform better in the search engine’s organic listings. The techniques involved can be sub-structured into several areas of activity, as detailed below.

1) Page readiness – Search engines expect to crawl clean HTML code. Every page of a website should be validated to eliminate errors and sloppy coding.

2) Site readiness – Search engine web bots follow the links on your web pages and thereby find new pages to index. If a web bot meets a broken link it cannot continue spidering your site. Make sure you have no broken links. Also, provide a site map. A tool for creating site maps is available at my website, www.pro-seo.co.uk.

3) Keyword selection – It is vitally important to select the right keywords for which a particular page is to be optimized. The most obvious keywords are not always the best choice, and are often mega-competitive. Choose wisely.

4) Site structure – Your website should be structured in such a way that each page can be optimized for a maximum of two keywords. Do not try to optimize for a lot of keywords on one page. Remember, you have to write for your users. Writing copy is a balancing act that keeps both users and search engines happy, and is better achieved on a well structured site.

5) Copy writing – the visible text on your web pages should be structured to include the two most important keywords for that page’s content. Get the keywords into headers. Work the keywords into paragraph text, having your keywords appear near the beginning, near the middle, and near the end. Make some keywords bold, some italic and some underlined.

6) HTML tags – The most important of these is the Title tag. Get both keywords for that page into the Title tag, without repetition. For example, if your main key phrase is “diet plans”, and your second phrase is “diet supplements”, the Title tag should read “diet plans and supplements”. Do not repeat the word diet, to search engines it may look like spamming. If your main concern is to improve your Google ranking, you may have overlooked the Meta keywords and Meta description tags, don’t, there are more search engines than Google and they can all bring traffic. Also, get the keywords into H1 tags, H2 tags, alt attributes, and very important, your link text.

And after doing all that for every page in your website you may be asking: so where does SEM come in?

SEM

SEM includes SEO plus all the other things you can do to boost your visibility in the search engines and increase targeted visitors to your website. A condensed list may be as follows:

1) SEO (see above).
2) A link building strategy
3) Pay per click (PPC) campaigns.
4) Banner exchanges.
5) Press releases.
6) And any other activity that will get your website noticed.

SEM then, is the full package. Whereas SEO techniques are a vital, but not the only, component of that package.

Low carb diets: Are they safe?

Low carb diets: Are they safe?

Low carb diets are currently the most popularity type of diet regimen being used by many fitness conscious people. The low carb philosophy is taking the world by storm as millions of people are now trying out this new diet in the hopes of losing excess weight and fat.

Proponents of the low carb diet philosophy are also saying that aside from losing weight, it also has other inherent benefits. They said that it lowers cholesterol, helps control diabetes or completely stop it from developing in certain individuals. These are claims that seem to have been supported by actual facts as followers of a low carb diet plan have reported the same thing.

This is well and good because it is a good development to finally find a diet plan that is not only going to help you lose weight but will also have very noticeable and significant medical benefits.

But it cannot also be denied that there are many diet plans out there that are either not effective, bogus or even harmful and have a detrimental effect on one’s health. So the question also remains. Are low carb diets safe?

Not surprisingly there are certain arguments that are being presented against low carb diets and ultimately there are also moves to debunk the low carb diet philosophy. In fact, in 2004 a Canadian court made a ruling that foods that are sold in the country are prohibited from being marketed with reduced or no carbohydrate content. This is because, as the court ruled, carbohydrates have been seen as having no health risks. The ruling also stated tat all packaging that has and indication of “low carb” or “no carb” be phased out by 2006.

According to some critics and detractors of the low carb diet philosophy there are side effects to following this diet regimen. Some of the side effects of consuming low amounts of carbohydrates include ketosis. This is a certain metabolic state that is characterized by headaches, nausea, tiredness, dehydration, and dizziness. There is also the emanation of an sweet-smelling breath odor. There is also a chance of constipation because dietary fiber is usually cut down in the prepared dishes. In fact, because of the prevalence of constipation among Atkins Diet followers, there is now a clear guideline for the addition of fiber supplements during the induction stage.

The cutting down of calories that are taken from carbohydrates and replacing them with calories taken from meat may also increase the likelihood of raising the intake of both saturated fat and cholesterol – and this could increase your chances of getting heart disease. It has also been a contention that with the lessened carbohydrate – increased protein intake the kidneys will have to work harder to flush out impurities in the body. There is also a marked change in the acidity levels of the blood which can result in bone loss.

But according to trials made to prove the hypothesis, there was no evidence that following a low carb diet will damage the kidney or result in bone density loss.

Discover All About The South Beach Diet

Discover All About The South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet, created by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, is a safe and effective diet that differs from other diets in that it advocates not just a new way of eating but a new way of life.

The South Beach Diet puts an end to counting calories and it puts an end to portion control. The South Beach Diet also avoids putting people in a position where they feel like they’re depriving themselves from eating food that tastes good and satisfies them.

The focus of the South Beach Diet is on fats and carbohydrates, more specifically, the right fats and carbohydrates. With the South Beach Diet, you find that healthy carbohydrates and fats satisfy your hunger and feed you energy while eating the wrong carbohydrates and fats can actually make you feel hungrier than you were before eating them, causing you to eat even more and, as a result, gain weight.

The South Beach Diet works in 3 phases, dieters going through phases 1 and 2 sequentially, each for a particular period of time, then moving to phase 3 where they remain for the rest of their lives.

South Beach Diet Phase 1 – For two weeks certain forms of carbohydrates are restricted, based on their glycemic index (a measurement of their affect on a person’s blood sugar). Portion sizes for all other foods are normal. This two week period is the most intense and restrictive of the three phases. Foods emphasized in Phase 1 include chicken and turkey, fish and shellfish, vegetables with a low glycemic index (including salads with light dressing), low fat cheeses, eggs, and nuts. This is the period where drastic weight loss is usually noticed in a short time. This type of weight loss is not sustainable, however, which is why the South Beach Diet then promptly transitions you into Phase 2 where you can adjust your dietary patterns so as to achieve a more sustainable rate of weight loss without gaining back that initial poundage you just shed.

South Beach Diet Phase 2 – Here many of the carbohydrates that were forbidden in Phase 1 are incrementally introduced back into your diet. The desired effect of Phase 2 is to get yourself to a place where you lose between1 and 2 pounds each week, a rate of weight loss than you can easily sustain until you achieve your body’s individual “healthy weight” (generally best determined by your Body Mass Index and percentage body fat to muscle mass). Phase 2 lasts as long as it takes for you to reach your desired weight.

South Beach Diet Phase 3 – Now you begin to establish the balanced diet you aim to maintain for the rest of your life, so long as weight remains where it is. Should you start to gain weight again, you can simply go back to one or both of the earlier phases until you get back to where you need to be.

The South Beach Diet is not a starvation diet. In it, you eat 3 satisfying meals per day plus 2 snacks in-between meals. Your meal plans are not set in stone, so you can still enjoy variety and spontaneity in your diet.

Studies of the South Beach Diet have shown that it not only helps people lose weight, but it increases their “good cholesterol” (HDLs) and decreases their “bad cholesterol” (LDLs) levels, while also improving their levels of insulin.

Bulk Up Your Diet With Negative Calorie Foods!

Bulk Up Your Diet With Negative Calorie Foods!

Did you know that there are some foods, which require more energy to
metabolize than we obtain from eating them? This result is usually
referred to as the negative calorie effect. A simple example is water.
It supplies zero calories, but requires energy to swallow and warm to
body temperature.

Below is a list of other foods, which although they provide calories, the
amount is less than we need to do nothing. We call this Basal Metabolic
Rate..(BMR). That’s the amount of energy we need to breathe, circulate
the blood, remove the toxins and filter it. That doesn’t count the energy
we need to get out of bed, bathe, use the toilet and dress. We call these
foods negative calorie foods, (N.C.Fs.).

These must be a tremendous boost for someone wanting to lose weight.
Yes, but only if used properly. Healthy diet plans use items from all the
main food groups. From these, we get the nutrients to make the
building blocks, which are necessary to maintain the body in a healthy
state. A diet consisting of N.C.Fs., would result in us drawing our energy
requirements from our muscles. This results in weakness and wasting of
the body. Anorexics are a prime example.

So how can we use N.C.Fs. without harming ourselves?

The answer is quite simple. Use them as part of, and to bulk up a
balanced calorie-wise diet. For example, 1/2 grapefruit(vitamin C, fibre)
1 egg-white (protein) 2 slices melba toast (carbohydrate) pat of margarine
(non-saturated fat) 1 cup of 1% milk (protein, carbohydrate, low-fat,
calcium, vitamins) makes an excellent low calorie but nutritious breakfast.

Here is the list.

* Apples
* Asparagus
* Beets
* Blueberries
* Broccoli
* Cantaloupes
* Carrot
* Cauliflower
* Celery stalk
* Celery root
* Cranberries
* Cucumbers
* Eggplant
* Endives
* Garden cress
* Garlic
* Grapefruit
* Green beans
* Green cabbage
* Lamb’s lettuce
* Lemons
* Lettuce
* Onions
* Papayas
* Pineapples
* Prunes
* Radishes
* Raspberries
* Spinach
* Strawberries
* Tangerines
* Tomatoes
* Turnips
* Zucchini

Use it wisely, and good health.

Is the pH Miracle diet right for you

Is the pH Miracle diet right for you

The pH Miracle Diet is one of the most interesting and groundbreaking new eating plans to hit the world of nutrition and dieting. This way of eating proclaims that following the program will help restore your health to natural balance and rid you of a myriad of conditions, including excess weight. While most people are looking to shed a few pounds, this diet also claims to help with fatigue, muscle pain and indigestion, as well as many other problems.

If you’ve tried low carbohydrate diets before and felt terrible after consuming all of that protein, then the pH Miracle diet may be for you. This eating program is based on alkaline foods, which are better for your health and for your body. Since humans have a slightly alkaline pH, eating alkaline foods helps support the bodily pH balance. Most people eat a lot of acidic foods like animal protein, dairy products and wheat. The pH miracle diet consists of certain fruits, vegetables, alternative grains and vegetarian protein sources.

Dr. Robert Young, the creator of the pH Miracle diet, points out in his book that many people’s health problems are due to excess acidity in the body. Among other things, Young says that chronic fatigue, excess mucous production, nasal congestion, frequent colds and infections, stress, anxiety, weak nails, dry hair, dry skin, headaches, arthritis, muscle pain, hives and leg cramps are all signs of excess acidity.

If you have had any of these symptoms for an extended period of time, your acidic diet may be to blame. Think about how much of your diet relies on high acid foods, like animal protein and dairy products. If these problems have been a bother to your life and your health for some time, you’ll benefit from giving the pH miracle diet a try.

The pH miracle diet will be a welcome relief for those who have tried to do low carb diets with little success. The foods are less harsh on the stomach and digestive system than the heavy protein required on low-carb diets. There is also a better balance of protein to carbohydrates. The proteins that are used on the pH miracle diet are selected carefully for their level of acid. The proteins consist of alkalizing tofu, beans and nuts.

The pH miracle diet is also good for people who enjoy eating a vegetarian diet. If you’ve given up meat for a day or two and felt better, than this diet may be very beneficial for you. There is no meat on the diet and the only alkaline dairy product allowed is goat milk. Tofu, which has long been a mainstay of vegetarian diets, is a major part of the pH miracle diet.

If you have a diet that consists mainly of processed foods and very few vegetables, you will definitely benefit from this diet. A diet that consists of manufactured food has very little natural nutrients. This can cause many detriments to your health and you can suffer from the effects of malnutrition, even when you are eating your fill. The focus on vegetables and fresh foods in this way of eating will help get natural vitamins and minerals back into your diet. Just adding a moderate amount of alkaline foods to your diet can improve your health greatly.

The pH miracle diet is a good diet for many different types of people. If you fit any of the previous criteria, you owe it to your health to give this way of eating a try.

Carb Addict – Yes or No?

Carb Addict – Yes or No?

Would you like to find out what those-in-the-know have to say about carbohydrates? The information in the article below comes straight from well-informed experts with special knowledge about carbohydrates.

Now that we’ve covered those aspects of carbohydrates, let’s turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.

It has been estimated that three out of every four overweight people are addicted to carbohydrates. But what does this mean? In essence, it means that you have too much of the hormone insulin in your system. This insulin prompts you to eat often and to consume the wrong types of foods. Some of the tell-tale signs of carbohydrate addiction include fatigue, mood swings, and migraines which can be caused by low blood sugar.

A carb addiction can lead you to consume a whole bag of pretzels at one sitting, or to indulge in half a cake at dinner time. Your body is conditioned to eat as many carbs as possible. Thus, it may seem that at times you’re never really satisfied—no matter how much or how often you eat.

On the official Carb Addicts plan, you eat two meals composed of vegetables and protein; the other meal consists of protein, vegetables that are not filled with starch, and carbohydrates. During this last meal, known as the reward meal, you can even eat dessert. The trick is to skip the carbs for two meals each day.

The authors of the program believe that, if you follow this regimen, you will lose your cravings for carbohydrates in time. If your urge to consume carbs does not disappear by the second week of the program, they recommend checking your diet to see whether you are following the program closely.

With the Carb Addicts plan, like other diet plans, you need to closely monitor your portion sizes. All of your hard work will be in vain if you allow yourself to over indulge in sweets—even if it is for only one meal a day. Also, you need to make sure that the protein you consume is not high in fat. You may want to eat fish, chicken with the skin removed, or lean meats when trying to obtain a protein source.

Another important aspect of the Carb Addicts plan is that you are not permitted artificial sweetener except during your reward meal. This can be quite a challenge, especially if you’re accustomed to sweetened coffee in the morning. However, it can be well worth the deprivation in the long run as you see those pounds melt away.

There is no set time for the reward meal; however the authors of the plan recommend that the meal take place in the evening. This is because it can take 12 to 24 hours for the body to overcome carbohydrate overload. There is also a psychological advantage to having the meal at night. It gives you something to look forward to all day long.

You should begin your reward meal with a salad, such as a Caesar salad or an Oriental salad, then divide the rest of the meal into thirds: One third should consist of low-carb vegetables, one-third protein, and one-third carbs. This formula has proven successful in enabling individuals to achieve long-term weight loss.

As with many other meal plans, the biggest challenge for those who are on the Carb Addicts Diet is the ability to stick with it. Dieting can be hard work, no matter what kind of rewards await an individual at the end of the day. Your commitment will enable you to stay with the program, even when it becomes particularly challenging.

Surf the World Wide Web, and you’ll find a number of testimonials offering glowing reviews of the Carb Addicts Diet. But you should keep in mind that results can differ from individual to individual. While some people might see rapid weight loss with the Carb Addicts plan, others may see only moderate weight loss. The success of the program may depend on your own individual physiology.

Is the Carb Addicts Diet a fad? It all depends on who you talk to. While some people see it as a significant dietary breakthrough, others view it as just a passing fancy. Medical experts disagree as to whether the Carb Addicts Diet represents sound nutrition. In the end, you, in consultation with your personal physician, will have to decide whether the Carb Addicts Diet will work for you.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to learn more about carbohydrates.

Your Vet: The Perfect Resource to Educate You About Your Dog’s Diet

Your Vet: The Perfect Resource to Educate You About Your Dog’s Diet

Whether you have recently been blessed with a new puppy in your home, or you are a seasoned dog handler, it is wise to speak with a veterinarian about the best diet for your dog. With so many ideas, diet plans, and dog food varieties on the market, how do you know where to start?

Begin with your vet. A trusted veterinarian wants only what is best for your dog. Just like you, he or she wants to find and discover what is perfect for your dog’s diet. Talk about all aspects of your dog’s diet.

Your veterinarian can advise you on the basics of a dog’s diet. Often, your vet will recommend a dry dog food. Dry food as the main component of your dog’s diet, will increase the likelihood of good dental health for your pet, but this varies depending on specifics.

Treats are another area that you will want to discuss with the veterinarian. Do they encourage specific types of treats? What snacks are discouraged for your specific pet?

Each animal is different and you and your vet know your dog better than anyone. Working together, you will find what aspects of your dog’s diet work best, and what needs to be altered. Some breeds, for example, will often have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. For this reason, your vet may recommend a smaller portion for your dog’s diet than the recommended amount on the side of a dog food bag. If your older pet has trouble chewing, specific types of dog food may be beneficial as part of your dog’s diet.

Your dog’s diet plays a significant role in the health of your pet. Your vet can inform you about any supplements needed to boost your dog’s outlook for a happy and healthy life. Glucosamine is one item that is recommended by most veterinarians to promote healthy joints. This is especially true for dog’s of larger breeds.

The next time you are in the vet’s office is a great time to bring up your dog’s diet. Your vet will be able to weigh your dog to see if weight is an issue. He or she can take a look at the overall health of your pet. For example, if your dog has a dull coat, your veterinarian may suggest a different type of dog food or to add an egg to your dog’s diet.

During the lifetime of your pet, your dog’s diet may need to be changed to suit his or her needs. Puppies and older dogs may require additional amounts of protein or other vitamins and minerals. If your dog is bred, your vet may recommend other changes to your dog’s diet.

With all the hype about what is healthy for a dog’s diet, do not decide to go at it alone and inadvertently choose a poor diet. Speak to the vet about your dog’s diet and educate yourself on what is best for your beloved pet. A healthy diet is key to longevity. Both you and your vet want to see your dog live to be happy and healthy for many years, and providing a nutritious diet for your dog is one of the best ways to accomplish this goal.

Mediterranean Diet and the South Beach Diet: A Detailed Comparison

Mediterranean Diet and the South Beach Diet: A Detailed Comparison

Good health and longevity interests people of all ages from around the world. As a result, the weight loss and fitness industries have been booming for years. There are so many diets that those seeking help with their weight loss or health needs don’t know where to turn.

Two diets that have become extremely popular recently are the Mediterranean Diet and the South Beach Diet. Here’s a detailed comparison of both diets.

Mediterranean Diet Explained

The Mediterranean Diet is often called “The Healthiest Diet in the World” because of its healthy weight loss benefits. Just as the name implies, the Mediterranean Diet has been enjoyed by people who live in the Mediterranean region, particularly Italy and Greece, for thousands of years and is now being adopted by many Americans and others around the world.

It is a diet low in saturated fat with healthy mono-unsaturated fats being provided through fish, nuts and olive oil. It features foods such as dried fruits, vegetables, whole grains, small portions of meat such as salmon, turkey, lamb, and tuna, and a small amount of wine.

The Mediterranean Diet is known for its many benefits such as help in the prevention of gallstones, breast cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, Lou Gehrig disease, high cholesterol, and other diseases.

South Beach Diet Explained

The South Beach Diet is a newer “no carb” type diet where carbohydrates are prohibited during the first phase of the diet, and then are slowly introduced back into the diet after two weeks. There are three phases all together, with the third being for maintenance. The focus is on lean meats such as chicken, turkey, shellfish, and fish as well as nuts, eggs, and low-fat cheese. The benefits are weight loss with a long-term balanced diet plan to help with weight maintenance.

How the Diets are Alike

The similarities of these two diets include eating restaurant quality recipes and promoting healthy monounsaturated fats. Both diets are low in unhealthy saturated fats. The unhealthy fats are found in cheese and meat. Both diets promote healthy foods. Both provide an avenue for fast weight loss with a plan for lifetime maintenance. Also, both diets offer online support and memberships for delicious diet recipes. For instance, Ayhan’s Mediterranean Menu Plans are available for those who want to change over to a Mediterranean way of eating.

How They Differ

With the Mediterranean Diet, alcohol (especially wine) is allowed in moderation. It is prohibited in the first phase of the South Beach Diet. The Mediterranean Diet is high in fiber while the South Beach Diet is low in fiber during its initial phase.

Portion control is the main focus of the Mediterranean Diet while the South Beach Diet restricts “what” is eaten by prohibiting certain fruits and vegetables. Another major difference is that those who adopt the Mediterranean Diet may order foods, dressings and seasonings online for their cooking needs. The South Beach Diet does not offer products such as these.

The South Beach Diet has only been around a few years while the Mediterranean Diet has been around for thousands of years. Studies have shown that those eating a Mediterranean Diet have less risk of major diseases and can even increase longevity.

In this comparison, we see that both diets offer health and weight loss benefits. However, the Mediterranean Diet appears to be better for long-term good health and has fared well in many studies.

eo Diet – Meal Plans For Atheletes

Paleo Diet – Meal Plans For Atheletes

The Paleo diet is derived from the diet of our ancestors during the Paleolithic era. This is comprises of food items that are either hunted or farmed. Paleo Diet is more on natural and organic items. It is no wonder that many have been incorporating this kind of diet in their current lifestyle.

Paleo diet is not only intended for people who would like to eat healthy and lose weight. As a matter of fact, even athletes can greatly benefit from this kind of diet. Though we know that they are more demanding with regards to their food intake, Paleo diet can still satisfy their needs for such. Competitive athletes can bend the rules of the diet and customize it to suit their needs. They are more on food that can provide high sustained energy output and helps with quick recovery. Here is a simple meal plan that athletes can be able to follow.

Eating before exercising is something that athletes can do if they are trying to embark on Paleo Diet. As much as possible, they must be able to eat a moderate amount of food a couple of hours before doing something strenuous like exercising and training. Some of those fats and proteins technically will be consumed throughout the activity. It is suggested that the food that they would take would be low in fiber. Taking in 200 to 300 calories for each hour before the exercise is rather ideal.

If the athlete is anticipating long hours of workout, eating during exercising is suggested. Taking in fluids like a sports drink can satisfy this role, but take note of the unwanted nutrients like sugar. If you would be exercising for less than an hour, drinking water is a better alternative. When deciding on what to consume, consider the 200 to 400 calories per hour basis.

The first 30 minutes after workout and exercise is the most crucial part of an athlete’s body recovery. This must be given the most priority in any physical activity. It is recommended to take a recovery drink. This drink should contain a mix of carbohydrate and protein in a 4-5:1 ratio. For instance, 16 ounces of fruit juice with a banana would do great.

Athletes have a great demand with regards to food intake. However, this does not mean that the Paleo diet cannot fit the bill. This is more recommended since it is all natural. Today, many athletes are already appreciating and experiencing the great benefits of this particular diet.

The Hoodia Gordonii Diet

The Hoodia Gordonii Diet

When most people hear the word “diet,” they imagine themselves having to either fast or eat foods that taste like cardboard, giving up the things they enjoy eating. When you combine this with the fact that many diets have been nothing more than gimmicks, it becomes easy to see why many people have a negative view of diets, diet plans, and weight loss products in general.

However, just because there are many bad weight loss programs out there doesn’t mean that there aren’t any good ones. One example of a good diet program is the Hoodia diet. The Hoodia diet is basically a diet which is based off Hoodia products, which are themselves derived from the Hoodia Gordonii plant of Africa.

The Hoodia diet is quite distinct from most contemporary diets. For one, most diets require you to restrict the consumption of certain types of food, whether it is foods rich in white flour, red meat, or sweets. Many of these diets are tough to follow, simply because many people find it hard to only eat celery, fruits, and vegetables.

People are looking for a diet solution that allows them to lose weight without starving themselves, or having to resort to foods that they don’t really like eating. The Hoodia diet is perfect for people in this category, simply because it doesn’t require you to stop eating certain types of foods.

In order for you to start the Hoodia diet, you should first talk with your doctor. If your doctor agrees that there is nothing wrong with trying the diet, then you will want to only purchase Hoodia products which are certified. After this, there are a number of other important things you will want to add to the diet. One of the most important is the right foods.

While it is true that the Hoodia diet doesn’t have any specific foods that you should avoid, fruits, vegetables, and water should become an important part of your diet. Instead of avoiding eating junk foods, or fast foods altogether, you will simply want to reduce the amount that you eat.

Because Hoodia is an appetite suppressant, your cravings for food will gradually slow down. This means that if you eat a little bit of junk, and a lot of healthier foods, your appetite will slow down, and you won’t have a need to eat more.

Over time, you will begin to lose weight, and once you have the habit of including nutrient and fiber rich foods into your meals, you will become healthy and lose weight simultaneously.

eo Diet – The Caveman Diet

Paleo Diet – The Caveman Diet

Weight has always been a problem for almost everyone. We want to lose weight, shed that extra fat from the belly, have those most coveted six pack abs and more. It is no wonder that gyms, training machines, and diets are sprouting left and right. Weight loss is already one profitable market to begin with and this industry will continue to grow within the next few years.

Diet plans are another avenue to venture in case you want to push your weight loss agenda. To date, there are many existing ones in the market. One of which is the highly effective Paleo Diet.

So what exactly is a Paleo Diet?
Paleo Diet is also known as the Caveman Diet. Other alternative names include The Stone Age Diet and Paleolithic Diet. This basically revolves around the idea of the things men eat during this prehistoric era. The Paleo Diet is also known as the Hunter Gatherer Diet because these includes food item that can either be hunted or gathered.
Meat and seafood fit perfectly well in this kind of diet given the fact that they belong to the hunted category and prehistoric men hunted them before. Meanwhile, nuts, vegetables and fruits are good examples of the gathered category.

This particular diet stems on the idea that you need to rely on food that you either hunt or gather yourself. However this does not mean that you set up your own livestock or farm industry. Paleo tends to slant towards the idea of removing modern day food from our system. In order to satisfy such requirement, we should reduce if not eliminate processed and man-made foods, or those with high amounts of preservatives, found in cans, and so on. The important thing is that our nutrition choices are as natural and as unaltered as possible.

The good thing about following the Paleo Diet is that it is filled with quality, natural and high nutritional value food. Since it is filled with fruits and vegetables combined with seafood and meat, you would be amazed at how much nutrients you’re getting without relying on modern ingredients. You would also be lessening some digestive problem concerns that are caused by salt, sugar and dairy products. Foods filled with these ingredients are known to increase weight and can lead to other illnesses and diseases.

If you have been looking endlessly for effective diets, the Paleo Diet is definitely worth a try and not to mention this is also a cheaper alternative since you will only base your food intake on the hunted and gathered categories.

How To Choose A Herbal Detox Diet?

How To Choose A Herbal Detox Diet?

Toxins can include perfume, alcohol, cigarette smoke, pesticides, mercury, food additives, oral contraceptives, and cleaning supplies. Toxins are transformed chemically to less harmful compounds that can be excreted via stools or urine.

Is there anyone who should not try a detox diet?

Consult your primary care provider to find out if a detox diet is appropriate for you. A detox diet should not be used by pregnant or nursing women, children, or people with anemia, eating disorders, heart problems, lowered immunity, low blood pressure, ulcers, diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, ulcerative colitis, unless recommended and supervised by your primary care provider.

There are endless detox plans you can follow, so chose carefully. Some will advocate complete fasting or juice-only days, but beware of the health implications and never start such an extreme plan without consulting your doctor or a qualified nutritionist.

Detox Benefits

1. Improves symptoms of heartburn, constipation and gas and treats digestive disorders;
2. Boosts the immune system.

Allergies or sensitivies?

By and large, conventional health care only deals with masking the symptoms of allergies and food sensitivities, rather than attempting to resolve them. The first step that many alternative practitioners recommend is a change of diet that cuts out wheat and dairy foods, two common allergens. To do so is also the first step in “detoxing.” Higher levels of detoxing, as well as additional immune support through nutritional supplementation, have been known to help many allergy sufferers. Allergies are, however, almost by definition, a very individualized condition.

What happens after the detox?

Many of the foods that were eliminated during this diet can be allergenic. A natural health practitioner can help to systematically reintroduce food groups (wheat, dairy, gluten, corn) and note reactions to identify the food groups that may be aggravating health conditions such as sinus congestion, fatigue, skin conditions, arthritis and bloating and constipation. Flare-ups can occur, so supervision is recommended.

Paleo Diet – Starting the Diet and Loving It

With weight loss at the back of our heads, we resort to trying out different diet plans and regimens. Going to the gym may not be an option for others for a lot of reason like workload and responsibilities. The only way for other people to lose weight would be through monitoring our food intake. This is where Paleo Diet comes in.

Like any other diet, Paleo Diet is something that should be considered by people who want to lose weight. You may end up getting a rough start because you have to get used to the recipes and the concept of Paleo Diet, but eventually, you will get the hang of it. Here’s what you need to do to make the transition a lot smoother.

The first thing that you need to do is to clean your pantry and refrigerator. Remove the non-essential food items. Good examples of such are sodas, junkfoods, chips, dairies, pasta, cereals, chips, sugar, candies and more. Paleo Diet encourages healthy and natural eating so processed and manmade foods are literally off limits. This will help your body get the more important nutrients and vitamins.

Do The Trick With Low Carb Foods

Do The Trick With Low Carb Foods

You can hardly turn your head these days without seeing new studies that have been done that show the importance of cutting carbs out of your diet. New diet plans are coming out all the time that claim to have the perfect combinations of foods that will magically allow you to lose all of your extra weight without lifting a finger or sacficing any of the tastes you love so much. Eating low carb foods sounds so boring and hard, but it doesn’t have to.

As a registered dietician, it is my job and my joy to work with people in finding healthy food plans that are the best for them in achieving their health goals. I love sitting down with a client and discussing with them why they have made the decision to see me. Because you see, people have to get to a certain level of desperation and desire to change before they will go out of their way and make room in their tight budgets to see a dietician. I love hearing people talk about their struggles with weight and with making healthy eating choices. So many people desire to hear the truth about things like low carb foods but they have been so mis-informed by media.

Out of all the things people ask me, the questions I get most have to do with the truth about low carb foods and about switching to a low carb diet. People want to know whether or not it is an effective way to live, and if so, how they can do it without making their meals boring and bland. I love having this discussion about low carb foods because I happen to be a carb lover that has re-adjusted my eating habits in the past few years.

I tell all my clients that an important key to any health or eating program is balance. I tell them that this is why it is unrealistic and even harmful to think that we are doing good for our bodies by eliminated all carbs or all of anything from our diets. The purpose of low carb foods, which can be great, is to still enjoy the tastes and the health benefits (yes, benefits) of carbs while keeping them under control and trying to maintain your health and weight in the process.

Find some good information and read up about the truth about low carb foods if you don’t have the time or money to make an appointment with a dietician. Your health is worth it. Be proactive and learn the truth.

eo Diet – Stick and Succeed with It

Paleo Diet – Stick and Succeed with It

This is what we call the Paleo Diet.

Is This The Real Secret To Losing Weight?

Is This The Real Secret To Losing Weight?

Does maintaining a diet with no carbohydrates really help decrease weight? Since the early 1970s, several weight loss plans have supported avoiding or reducing carbohydrates, referred to as “carbs”, from our diets in varying quantities. Although these carb-conscious diets are embraced by some, they continue to raise questions for many. For example, it has been debated whether it is safe to limit carbohydrate intake, and whether this can be done in a healthy, sustainable way. Some carbohydrates are better or healthier than others. Another question raised is whether or not everyone should limit carbohydrates, and whether someone can eat a diet of natural foods while controlling carbohydrate consumption.

Aside from the common theories on why low carb diets work, no agreement exists on what makes up the optimal reduced carbohydrate diet. Suggestions of the various diet plans recommend a range from 20 to 100 grams of carbohydrates daily, and few recommend no carbs at all, although this diet has been seen in Hollywood. Many of these diets advise restraining from the intake of carbs such as bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, and added sugars, but they differ in implementation and thorough directions. There are also no official guidelines on what foods should constitute a controlled carb diet, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no formal classification of a low carbohydrate food.

To put the resulting mystification into perspective, keep in mind that one-size-fits-all just doesn’t work when it comes to dieting. Nutrition choices should be individualized and depend upon genetics, lifestyle, activity levels, health status, and special needs. Some experimentation may be necessary to determine what works best for you. Some may find cutting back on carbohydrates is most favourable for their health, weight, and blood sugar levels, and they decide to limit their carb intake as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

With regards to low-carbohydrate diets you may well lose weight on this regimen because if you cut down on bread, pasta, rice, crisps and eat only meat, fish and vegetables you will tend to eat less overall. But you are likely to get bored with this diet and therefore slip or get too hungry as your diet will lack bulk. Furthermore, limiting carbohydrates causes the body to rely on fat or muscle for energy. This can create a by-product called ketones, causing fatigue and nausea. This is particularly dangerous for anyone with diabetes, heart or kidney problems.

Yes, there is such thing as a healthy low-carb diet. The key is to not go overboard and throw out all the essential nutrients we need for health and optimum energy in pursuit of a low-carb eating plan. High-carb diets typically contain 50 to 60 percent of total calories from carbohydrate. A healthy low-carb plan will contain 40 to 45 percent of calories from carbohydrate. That way you keep the carbs that provide nutrition: fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, milk and yogurt and decrease your use of simple carbs like sugar, candy, cookies, soda and snack foods.

Fresh fish are high in protein and are often carbohydrate free. Shellfish generally contain some carbohydrates. Keep an eye out for prepared seafood products-like crab cakes or breaded fish-that may contain moderate amounts of carbohydrates. Protein-packed meat and poultry make up the bulk of many controlled carb diets. Try eating bacon, chicken, deli meats, duck, sausage, pork, lamb, rabbit, etc.

There’s also no need to stay away from nature’s sweets. Keep in mind that high fibre content in certain fruits accounts for a sizable percentage of carbohydrates. Fibre is essential for the body and it is generally subtracted from total carbohydrates when determining “net carbs” — the carbs thought to affect blood sugar and, therefore, weight loss.

Even if you are adhering to a controlled carb diet, it is important to eat plenty of produce. Colourful vegetables provide fibre, vitamins, minerals, and numerous phytochemicals. The carbohydrate content of vegetables ranges greatly. Non-starchy, brightly coloured vegetables are a safe bet for those watching their carbs.

In additional he/she will very likely be able to recommend a more specialised practitioner and give you contact information.

Next – watch your fat intake and the fat content of the foods you are buying. Many times people launch into a diet and watch every tiny calorie they consume but fail to read the fat content on the label of their food products. Calories do count but fat is a much more important consideration. Fat is a huge factor in weight gain and by eliminating as much of it from your diet you can lose weight without it overly adversely affecting the amount of food you eat. By reducing your fat intake you will see a dramatic effect on your overall weight-loss and on your health!

Try to keep a food diary outlining what you eat and how you feel about the food you eat. Health and nutritional professionals strongly advise this as a first and powerful step in your weight management. Keeping a diary of your food intake, your feelings around food and your exercise routines is a powerful way to analyse your eating habits. Being disciplined enough to keep a diary will allow you to see if there are any emotional reasons, like stress, loneliness or boredom for example, that are contributing to your eating patterns.

Research a few weight loss plans and pick one that you think you could stick with or perhaps even enjoy. Look into the history of the weight loss plan. Read other people’s comments about it to find out which one has the highest permanent positive gains. Look at what food is allowed on the diet and which foods are not. Does it incorporate some kind of fitness program? What amount of exercise is required? Will you have enough time and motivation to cook all those strange dishes?

There is absolutely no point launching in starting a diet or weight loss plan if you know you are going find it extremely difficult and get discourage at the very begining. Use your food diary to plan ahead. Once you have chosen your desired plan show it to your doctor or health care professional and make sure they approve of it! Many diets and weight loss plans can be very dangerous and health threatening. Make sure your plan is followed to the letter as you may be doing damage that you are unaware of if you do not. For example, a very low calorie diet that is within the recommended calorie-intake level, can cause long-lasting harmful effects to your body if you start skipping meals!

Once you begin make sure you write all your positive gains into your food diary. Do not berate yourself if you fall short on your goals. Be sure to give yourself the appropriate positive approval when you do succeed. Praise yourself for reaching each goal, even if you didn’t lose the weight you wanted congratulate yourself when you follow your plan – you are proving to yourself that you have the will-power to do it!

Don’t allow yourself to become too discouraged if you miss a target. You are still going in the right direction by staying focused and disciplined. Spoil yourself a little when you succeed. Buy yourself some new clothes for your new body and enjoy the fact that you have done your best. This is positive reinforcement and will help you to maintain your dietary plan and your weight in the long term.

Looking For Exercise Plans For Quick Weight Loss

Looking For Exercise Plans For Quick Weight Loss

If you have been looking to lose weight and have been trying to find exercise plans for quick weight loss, then you have likely become frustrated with trying to find an effective workout that would get you the results you wanted. There are many different types of exercise plans, but some are ineffective when it comes to losing weight. In order to obtain the best results when attempting to exercise and lose weight, a few simple rules need to be followed.

First, when you are on an exercise plan, you should also diet in order to ensure that you keep the number of calories you take in balanced in proportion to the number of calories you burn. Exercising does you no good if you just go out and eat more when you are finished. Dieting is the first key to any truly successful weight loss, especially when you want to make sure that you not only get those pounds off, but that you keep them off, too. Once you find the right diet, now you are ready to find the right exercise plan.

Start by doing some stretches. Stretches help to not only get your heart pumping and your blood flowing, but also help to warm up your muscles and joints. This helps to ensure that while you are exercising, you are less likely to do any damage, such as pulling a muscle. Such damage can be extremely painful at times and should be avoided when possible. Stretches help to make sure that you do not hurt yourself when you decide to exercise.

The next thing you should do is your main set of exercising. This can be anything from a good, endurance building workout, such as walking, jogging, running, or riding a bicycle. These workouts help to build up the strength of your heart and your lungs, which enables you to do more without running out of air. You could also choose to go towards more of a strength building workout, which consists of weight lifting. However, if you are attempting to just lose weight, muscle building workouts will not help you much.

Muscles weight more than fat, which means as you burn fat doing strength building exercises, you are increasing the muscles in your body. This makes it so that you end up sometimes gaining weight when trying to use strength building exercises when dieting. If you are aiming to burn fat and gain muscle, but are not concerned about weight itself, then this is the way to go.

After you finish your work out, be sure to stretch again. This helps to bring your body slowly back down from the higher level of activity that it was at. Following all of these tips can help you significantly, as this helps to ensure that you do not damage your body when you are using your exercise plans for quick weight loss.

Chew Your Way To Diet Success This Holiday Season

Chew Your Way To Diet Success This Holiday Season

If you’re looking for a new and innovative way to stay away from all the holiday goodies this year, you might not need to look for anything other than a pack of sugarless gum. A survey conducted by the Mayo Clinic revealed that chewing gum can actually raise your metabolic rate by as much as 20%. The study suggested that chewing gum may also make it possible to lose as much as an additional 11 pounds per year. Above and beyond the benefits of increasing your metabolism and burning calories; chewing gum may also have significant advantages when it comes to staving off the temptation to indulge in holiday foods.

A recent study conducted by Wrigley confirm that an astounding 70% of Americans eat more at holiday parties than they normally would any other time of the year while 72% find it difficult to maintain their diet during this time of year. Chewing gum; however, may make it possible to not only avoid eating more but to stick to your diet as well. Here are some tips on ways that you can incorporate gum into your diet plans this holiday season:

Instead of giving into temptation, keep a steady supply of gum available at your desk at work as well as in your purse or pocket when you’re out and about this holiday season. That way you’ll be able to pop in a stick of gum whenever you feel tempted to cheat on your diet. You may very well find that if you chew a piece of gum for a few minutes and engage in another activity, such as shopping, wrapping gifts or visiting with friends and family; the temptation to snack will have completely subsided.

If you plan to bake holiday treats for others this year, chewing gum while you’re doing it can keep you from snacking while the goodies are baking. While it might not seem like much at the time, all those little taste tests can really add up. Keep a stick of gum in your mouth and you won’t be nearly as likely to sample.

If you’re concerned that the calories associated with the gum will backfire on your diet plans, there’s good reason to believe that you can lay those fears aside. According to a registered dietician at Baylor College of Medicine, the average stick of sugarless gum contains just five to ten calories. If you opt for low calorie gum and not one loaded with sugar, you can be sure you’re not replacing one problem with another. Most gums containing sugar can have 25 calories per piece and while that might not seem like a lot, if you chew several pieces per day it can start to add up. Instead, be sure to choose a sugarless brand with whatever sweetner you prefer.

This type of gum usually has less than 10 calories per piece; which is really quite insignificant when compared to what you might be consuming instead. If you’re substituting it for a high-calorie dessert or snack as well as participating in an active and healthy lifestyle; you can actually reduce your overall calorie intake.

Detox Diets 101: Keeping Your body in Shape through Proper eating

Detox Diets 101: Keeping Your body in Shape through Proper eating

If you’re feeling sluggish, or you think you’re always full and the food has settled in your stomach, undigested. If you think you’re fat and need to lose weight. And if you think that you’ve ingested more than the allowed preservatives and additives into your body and your liver’s starting to show symptoms of abuse, then it’s time for you to go on a Detox program.

Detox or detoxification is the process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the body. Detox plans may be in different forms and ways – from regular exercise to body scrubs and spa massages, to yoga and meditation. But the simplest and the most common perhaps is to go on a detox diet.

A detox diet is a program that minimizes the chemicals ingested into the body by going for organic food. It highlights food like vitamins and antioxidants that the body needs for detoxification. It also involves taking in of food that will aid in the elimination of toxins like high fiber food and water. It generally suggests a high intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and lots of fluids, while cutting down on caffeine, alcohol, yeast and sugars.

So why go for a detox diet? If you’re a regular fast food chain eater, you’ve probably ingested many fat-soluble chemicals contained in the French fries, cheeseburgers, twisters and soft drinks you’ve consumed. An ‘overload’ of these chemicals in the body can lead to illness and conditions like liver malfunction, kidney problems, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and inefficient metabolism. And the most common symptoms of these illnesses are the usual fatigue, poor skin and low tolerance to pain.

By going on a detox diet, people would have improved energy, clearer and fairer skin, a regular bowel movement, improved metabolism and digestion, increased concentration. Generally, it spells wellness and a better well-being.

A word of caution…though anyone is allowed to take on a detox diet, pregnant women or those who are nursing are cautioned not to go on such plans as they need the necessary nutrient for nursing. And unless recommended by a doctor, people with anemia, eating disorders, heart disease, low immunity, low blood pressure, ulcers, cancer, the underweight or those suffering from alcohol or drug dependency should try on a detox diet. Furthermore, such detox diet programs should be properly planned with the doctor and a nutritionist.

Other Things You Need to Know

Side effects may occur within the first few days of starting the detox diet. There’s headache and a general feeling of weakness as the body is adjusting to the change in food intake. So it is recommended to start your diet plan gradually or on Fridays when you won’t be doing much physical activity or requiring much energy. Others may experience diarrhea as the body eliminates the toxins, so take care not to be dehydrated. Drink plenty of water.

Take note that such detox diet programs should not be done for a long time. They are normally recommended to be done at least one to two times a year, and should be done during the warm months.

If you’re thinking of getting started, make sure you consult a doctor or a nutritionist. Read up on detox diets and seek advice from the experts. Remember: Too much is bad. After all, you’re doing it to improve your health, not ruin it!

As dieters had trouble with low-fat plans, they searched for a new solution and Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution book found a new audience.

A lot of people have jumped on the Atkins bandwagon and there has been a lot of hype as a result. But what are the basic principles of the Atkins diet?

The Atkins diet is based on a theory of why we get fat. According to Dr. Atkins, the over-consumption of carbohydrates and simple sugars leads to weight gain. The way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat have more to do with your waistline than the amount of fat or calories that you consume. In his book, Atkins outlines a phenomenon called “insulin resistance.” He theorizes that many overweight people have cells that do not work correctly.

When you eat excess carbohydrates and sugar, your body notices that sugar levels are elevated. Insulin is released from the pancreas in order to store sugar as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells for extra energy later on. However, your body can only store so much glycogen at once. As soon as your body reaches its limit for glycogen storage, the excess carbohydrates are stored as fat. This happens to everyone who eats too many carbohydrates.

However, insulin resistant individuals have an even harder time of using and storing excess carbohydrates. The more insulin that your body is exposed to, the more resistant it becomes. Overtime, the pancreas releases more insulin and cells become insulin resistant. The cells are trying to protect themselves from the toxic effects of high insulin. They create less glycogen and more fat.

As a result, insulin resistant individuals gain extra weight. The carbohydrates get converted into fat instead of energy. Other side effects include fatigue, brain “fog” (the inability to focus, poor memory, loss of creativity), low blood sugar (which can leads to hypoglycemia), intestinal bloating, sleepiness, depression and increased blood sugar. There is much more than weight at stake when you are insulin resistant.

The remedy for people who are insulin resistant is a diet restricted in carbohydrates. The crux of the Atkins diet is a limitation of carbohydrates in all of its forms. The foods restricted on the Atkins plan include simple sugars (like cookies, sodas and sweets) and complex carbohydrates (like bread, rice and grains). Even carbohydrates that are considered healthy, such as oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat bread, are restricted on the program.

The diet has you restrict your carbohydrate intake to less than 40 grams a day. This will put your body in a state of ketosis. While in ketosis, your body will burn fat as fuel. According to Dr. Atkins’ research, the ketosis state will also affect insulin production and it will prevent more fat from being formed. Your body will begin using your stored fat as an efficient form of fuel, and you’ll lose weight.
Another benefit of the Atkins plan is that ketosis will end your cravings for carbohydrates. If you’ve been living on a carb-heavy diet, you may have found that you simply cannot get enough carbohydrates. With carbohydrate restriction and ketosis comes a reduction in carbohydrate cravings. People who have been on the Atkins diet for some time report that they do not crave carbohydrates as they once did.

Although the initial phases of the Atkins diet are rather strict, the program teaches you to restore balance to your diet in the long run. People who use the diet slowly reintroduce minimal amounts of carbohydrate into their eating until they find a comfortable balance between their health and carbohydrate use.

The basic principles of the Atkins diet have been adapted to many other low-carb diet plans. However, Atkins popularity still remains strong as one of the most effective low-carbohydrate solutions for those who are insulin resistant.
